Burial insurance guidance from Aurora Insurance Partners
A practical place to begin

The family conversation guide

Use this conversation guide to explore burial insurance for parents together. Start with your parent’s wishes, then work through the practical details before deciding whether to apply.

Begin with a conversation, not an application

Ask your parent what they want the family to understand about their final wishes. Talk about existing life insurance, savings and any arrangements already made. A new policy may not be necessary, and existing coverage deserves a careful review.

Understand the four roles

The insured is the person whose life is covered. The owner controls the policy according to its terms. The premium payer funds it, and the beneficiary is designated to receive an eligible death benefit. One person can fill more than one role, but paying alone does not automatically make someone the owner or beneficiary.

Keep your parent involved

Buying life insurance on a parent generally involves their knowledge, consent and the insurer’s application requirements. The insurer may require an insurable interest: a qualifying relationship or financial interest in the insured person’s continued life. Ask the insurer how this applies before making arrangements.

Compare the expenses and the ongoing premium

List the expenses you want help covering and the resources already available. Request an actual quote that identifies the coverage amount, payment frequency, how long premiums are due and whether they can change. Choose an ongoing premium the payer can sustain.

Ask when benefits become available

A policy effective date and the date a full benefit becomes payable are not always the same. Some policies limit benefits for certain causes of death during an initial period. Ask for the exact terms, exclusions and amounts payable before and after that period.

Protect the coverage you already have

Do not cancel an existing policy based only on a quote or application. Replacement may bring new underwriting, cost or benefit limitations. Review the current policy and any proposed replacement carefully before making a change.
